How We Work

The Downtown Shareholders is governed by a self-elected Board of Directors. An Executive Committee, appointed by the Chairman and approved by the Board of Directors, act as a leadership group for the Board. The Gold Level members annually elect up to 3 members to represent them on the Board of Directors.

The Downtown Shareholders staff carries out the mission of the organization under the leadership of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors and Executive Committee meet on a monthly basis. All members are invited and encouraged to attend the Board meetings. These meetings provide an opportunity to learn more about the activities of the organization and its committees. Committees are appointed as needed to undertake special projects that support the mission of the organization.

How We are Funded

The Downtown Shareholders is primarily funded through membership dues. Membership is open to all businesses, nonprofit organizations and individuals interested in the welfare and development of Downtown Kansas City, Kansas. A convenient dues structure allows members to participate based upon their interest and ability to pay. The Downtown Shareholders has a rolling membership structure in which dues are paid on an annual basis. There are five membership levels available: Gold, Silver, Bronze, Contributors and Individuals.

The Downtown Shareholders also receives grant funding for special projects, seeks sponsorships for events, and has management contracts for certain activities.

Programs

The Downtown Shareholders is working to create a vibrant and economically healthy Downtown through information and advocacy. Our mission is to stimulate, promote and encourage the revitalization of Downtown KCK as a thriving and profitable center of business, commerce, culture, residence, entertainment and other economic development activity.

Background

Incorporated in 2005, Downtown Shareholders represents the businesses and organizations in the area. One of our first projects was to create a new Downtown Master Plan; this plan was adopted in June 2007. Downtown Shareholders has become an important information resource and advocate for business and property owners. Downtown Shareholders members are helping to shape City policy, inspire housing and commercial development, and help plan for intelligent land use. Today, Downtown Shareholders is beginning to effectively implement a comprehensive menu of economic development initiatives. We offer members an effective way to stay informed and become involved in downtown projects, issues and activities that may impact their businesses and properties.
